Robert H. Mathog Lions Hearing Centers

From 1977, until his death in October 2014, Dr. Robert H. Mathog served as professor and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Wayne State University, and he was also chief of Otolaryngology at Harper and Detroit Receiving hospitals from 1977 to 2007.

As a staunch supporter of the Lions of Michigan’s efforts to fight hearing loss and provide affordable hearing aids for people, Dr. Mathog served as president and chair of our Eastern Michigan Lions Hearing Center from 2000 to 2014.  He was devoted to our Lions’ cause and to raising the necessary funds to support our efforts to help people in need.

Dr. Mathog built an international reputation in facial trauma, cancer and rehabilitative surgery, and he published more than 200 papers and chapters in scientific journals and books on issues ranging from vestibular function, otology, swallowing, scar revision, facial fractures, craniofacial reconstruction for cancer, regional flaps for head and neck surgery, and post-traumatic deformities. He is well known for his books: Textbook of Maxillofacial Trauma, Atlas of Craniofacial Trauma and Mathog’s Atlas of Craniofacial Trauma.

Today, through our Lions Hearing Centers, we conduct hearing screenings for thousands of children and adults each year; we provide affordable hearing aids to those in need; and we help hearing impaired children and their families identify resources for help and support.  We partner with many of the top hearing aid manufacturers in the United States, including GN ReSound, Oticon, Phonak, Rexton, Starkey and Unitron; audiology groups and hearing professionals, including the Wayne State University School of Audiology, the Carls Center at Central Michigan University, Michigan Ear Institute, HearUSA, Fluke Hearing and NuEar; our Michigan Lions Clubs and other charities and organizations to deliver affordable hearing healthcare services across Michigan.

From Testimonials;

“I want to say what a blessing to have had your help in getting the hearing aids for my husband. He had his appointment on February 1, and for the first time in years, he was able to hear me from across the room without me having to shout. It’s wonderful, and he is like a child learning about new sounds. He is a changed person, happy and full of life. He doesn’t just say yes to things or act like he has heard every word, like he did before. I was holding back tears to know that you made our dreams come true. At times, we have just wanted to give up, but now, we have a brighter outlook on life ahead. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts”

“Dear Lions Friends: the frogs are singing, my parakeet’s chatter fills the house, cars whoosh by, clocks tick, lawnmowers purr. It’s spring, and I can hear it all. I can also hear friends and the conversation in small groups. I can tone down the resonant ringing of bell choirs and pipe organs and tune up to the chatter of grandchildren. My desk phone is now so loud, I jump when it rings. I had forgotten that the world is such a noisy place. Thanks to your help, I can count the gift of restored hearing as one my biggest blessings. The only way I can express my appreciation is to say a heartfelt thank you for brining life back to full vibrancy through your gift of hearing aids.”

“I want to thank you for the wonderful gift of hearing aids. I received them about 2 months ago. I had to go back for some adjustments, but after the adjustments, they are working great. I could not have ever gotten anything like these hearing aids on my Social Security income if it weren’t for you and your help. My wife and I thank you so much for filling this great need in both our lives. It is amazing to hear the birds and the people talking, the things I had grown accustomed to not hearing. When I received these aids, I was so amazed at just how much hearing loss I had. I was even learning to read lips to communicate. We are so blessed with your gift to both me and my wife. Thank you again for meeting this need in our lives.”

“My daughter was ready to start Kindergarten, and she needed special digital hearing aids so that she would be able to participate like a normal hearing child. We couldn’t afford the hearing aids that she needed on our own. Thankfully, the local Lions Club and the Lions of Michigan Foundation provided the necessary hearing aids. They worked so well, our daughter thought people were shouting at her.”

“I’m writing on behalf of a client of HearUSA. She has a severe hearing impairment in her right ear, and she is profoundly hearing impaired in her left ear. Basic communication is difficult for her, and safety is a concern. She is in great need of a hearing instrument for her right ear. I hope the Lions can assist her with this need.”

“We want to take this opportunity to thank you one more time for the generous gift you gave my children. They have had their new speech processors for 2 months and have adjusted well to them. Now, we are starting to see improvements in the clarity of their speech. We will never forget what you have helped us accomplish. Every gain Leanna & Mitchell make in the future will be in part based on your kindness.”
